2nd Lieutenant Halmyth Carroll Reese

Halmyth Carroll Reese was born on 17 July 1921 Albany, Shackelford County, Texas.

The family consisted of four persons, his parents, Carroll Halmyth Reese (Lt Reese) and his sister Martha Jo Reese. If they needed Lt Reese they called him Always Carrol or Carrol Jr and never used Halmyth.

Lt Reese had always been fascinated by aviation and built model aircraft at a young age,  his mother hung them up in their laundry room.

Halmyth (who went by Carroll Jr.) graduated from Albany High School in 1938. He soon received a scholarship to go to Jones Junior College in Ennisville, whicih was a two-year college. He graduated probably in 1941.

Lt. Reese was a funny guy, His sister Martha Jo told Candance Kiene that his uncle was in for some jokes:

One time when was in school in Albany, he and his friends managed to move a cow to the roof of the school building, Candace believed around April as a Fool joke. They wanted students who showed up for school that morning to see the hilarious sight.

In addition to his passion for aircraft, Lt. Reese, had a passion for music.

He shared this passion with his mother who taught piano lessons on a daily basis. Lt. Reese as a boy played piano for almost two hours every day and also improvised very with music.

Reese himself played clarinet  in the Albany High school band during his teenage years. He also played in a small dance band in Albanay.

During his studies he played in the college band and in an orchestra where they performed during the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans in 1939 and 1940.

They also performed more often in other parades and on the radio.

In 1941, Lt Reese started his training at the CAA Civil Aeronautics Authority at Hardin Simmons University where he attended several courses.

Voorbereiding op de Oorlog / Preparation for the War

In 1942 Halmyth Reese volunteered to join the Army Airforce.

After this he continued his training as an officer at Kelly, Coleman municipal Airport, Goodfellow Fields on February 16, 1942, after which he eventually got his promotion to 2nd Lieutenant in Ellington field Pilot school Houston TX and got his wings with the AC-RES Class 43-B. Like every Army Airforce Crew, he then had to undergo crew training (advanced combat training) in AAB Avon Park, Florida.

Toombridge lag net buiten Belfast.

This was a training school for B26 Marauder Bomber crews. The largest part of the crew was assembled here. On 22 June 1943 Lt Rees wrote a letter to his parents in which he wrote that his crew was composed and with this crew he performed a training mission on 21 June at an low altitude of 400ft with 100lb practice bombs.

The crew consisted of:

Radio operator Sgt Paul R Scott, Engineer SSgt Alex E Sundberg, Tail gunner Sgt L Jacobs and Co-pilot Sussman and Bombardier George M Walter.

He also describes that the next day they would perform a new mission with 300lb bombs with a time delay.

This letter also shows that he and the operations officer Capt. Nichole who had just returned last Friday from New Guinea had been a good relationship and went to town.

On 30 September 1944, the parents of Lt Reese received a letter from the Commanding General Army Air Forces H.H. Arnold in which he Lt Reese described as a, thoughtful and brave officer, seriously intentional, whose aggressiveness in performing all assignments was remarkable.

After completing this, 2nd Lt Reese was given the opportunity in August 1943 to briefly visit the home front before being shipped to England in September 1943.

Through southern route they flew to England with a new B26 marauder.

On 14 October 1943 they arrived in England and they had to deliver the new Marauder at the 9th USAAF depot in Prestwick or Horham.

From there, the B26s were divided to the different bomb groups they needed at that moment.

The Reese crew left from there to Toomebridge Northern Ireland, (Combat Crew Replacment Center Groups).

Toombridge was just outside of Belfast. The crew stayed here for a few weeks to learn how to fly combat missions.

Then they had to report to their assigned units (bomb groups) in England.

From personal letters dated December 1943 it appeared that Lt Reese had met a young lady in Belfast.

He had attended a few dances with her probably on base and admiring the architecture of the town hall in Belfast. He had bought himself a bicycle, and because he had a cold for a long time he had bought long woolen underwear and a pair of English flight boots.

At Christmas, his parents sent him a number of gifts and he always asked for sweets when he wrote to them.

On 31 December 1944 Lt Reese wrote a letter to his parents mentioning "ball bearing's probably because at that time they had attacked a ball bearing factory with great success.

In addition Lt. Reese wrote regularly V-mail to his sister (Martha Jo Reese) who worked in Forth, Worth and had plans to get married in Los Angeles.

On March 5th 1944 Lt Reese was transferred to England. He went to Station 358 located in Earls Colne a small town in Essex with the 453th Bomber squadron 323rd Bomber group of the 9th Army Airforce.

Every new crew did get a experienced officer as a observer, he had to look if the crew could accomplishedd the next mission by there selfs.

This officer was Maj. C.Berryman.

Why Sgt Brown was added at the moment is still unclear.

Lt Reese wrote arround March 1944 that he wanted to visit London, with his friend "Hill".

Lt. Reese had never been to London at time, but left photos of London.

In all likelihood it seems that the photographs, were made in London around  March 1944  showing that he could still realize his dream.

Despite the horrors of the war, his sister married in California on 30 March 1944. ( See second picture left). Shortley after they did married also her husband was transfered to the ETO as a Army infantry soldier stationed a while in Belgium. He was also a designated sharpshooter.

These are the parents of Candace Kiene of which I received a lot of information about LT reese. At the time the couple did married they did not know what had happened to Lt Reese.

Lt. Reese mother wrote a letter dated April 2, 1944, asking her son to send a wire if possible, because at that time she had not received word of his death.

Shortly after  Martha Jo (Reese) Kiene got married, on April 10th 1944 Lt Reese's father received a telegram from the Ministry of Defense bearing bad news, that Lt Reese was MIA (Missing in Action) above Holland IJmuiden.

Shortly after, the Red Cross sent a telegram to the United States on July 25th1944 to confirm that Lt Reese was KIA, (Killed In Action).

The Family Reese did get a telegram on August 6Th 1944 from the Ministry of Defense that Lt Reese was KIA on 26 March 1944 above Holland  IJmuiden.

Then the whole family, including Lt Reese's sister Martha Jo, came together in Albany to support each other in this sadness.

The parents, sister and other descendants of Lt Reese will not forget    him.

They remember him, all their lives.

From stories Lt Reese appears to have carried out a total of 7 missions. Probably this were 6 Combat Trainings missions  because no data was available about these missions and 1 Combat traning with the 323rd to IJmuiden Holland.

On 28 November 1944, Lt Reese was Distinguished  posthumous for the Air Medal. On 27 December 1944 his father and mother Mr. Carroll M Reese and Mrs. Velma Reese received his Air Medal.

On 19 March 1952, the parents of Lt Reese qualifies for the Goldstar Lapel button, a Gold Star lapel button in the United States.
